Our City

Winnipeg, the
capital of Manitoba and one of Canada's largest cities (464 square
kilometers), lies at the junction of the Red and Assiniboine rivers. It
is the geographical center of Canada, and is situated just 95 kilometers
north of the border to the United States. Because of its' central
location, Winnipeg is an important transportation center (Winnipeg has
been nicknamed "Gateway to the West"). Some of the
nicest beaches in North America are on the shores of Lake Winnipeg, just
an hour's drive north of our city. Lake Winnipeg (24,400 km2)
is the 6th largest freshwater lake in Canada.
With its' 650,000 citizens, Winnipeg is home to more than half
of Manitoba's population, and is one of Canada's most ethnically
diverse cities. There is a vibrant French community in Winnipeg, as well as a strong Ukrainian and German population.
On the list of the top 100 attractions in North America, several are
found in Winnipeg including Folklorama, a two-week long summer
celebration of our cultural diversity: over 40 different countries are
showcased in 40 "pavilions" throughout the city. Another, Festival
du Voyageur, is a 10 day long winter carnival featuring some 400
musical acts as well as well as large snow sculptures created by local
and international artists.
Winnipeg enjoys 4 very diverse seasons. Summers are warm, often hot;
winters are snowy (with an average snowfall of 126 cm per year); spring is the season of "new life" and the fall is
characterized by a wonderful display of colors as the leaves on
trees change colors.
